Natives of the landscape

Growers, landscape architects, and landscape practitioners should pay special attention to local species. The production of drought and drought-resistant local species will also affect the future of the landscape.

Pistacia lentiscus (Gum bush)

All the plants you see here in the landscape photos are varieties we see in our country's nature. For example, Pistacia lentiscus (Mastic Bush) is one of the main individuals that form the maquis plant community found even in the inner parts of the Aegean and Mediterranean. You can feel its spicy smell when you touch it. As seen in photos 1-2-3-4, it was used as a short fence around the parking area and provided a very effective appearance. The same plant is also used in the form of large balls.

Myrtle (Myrtus communis subs. 'Tarentina')

Another plant is Myrtus (Myrtus communis subs. 'Tarentina'). This plant seen in photos 5-6 is not a plant we are used to seeing in landscapes. However, it is a natural species of the Aegean and Mediterranean regions and is an incense plant. The fruit of the wild berry is sold in markets in some districts of Muğla, the white and black fruits are a fruit sold worldwide and attract great attention.

Chaste tree (Vitex agnus-castus)

Vitex agnus-castus (Chaste tree) Vitex is a tropical plant genus that forms part of the Verbenaceae family. There are about 250 species that are deciduous. It is mostly found in vineyard garden fences and dried riverbeds. It is a region where white and blue flowered varieties are naturally seen in the Mediterranean and Aegean Basins and has a wide distribution. As seen in photos 7-8-9, it is also used in landscaping. It is effective with its long flowering period. In photo 10, Garabash grass (Lavandula stoechas) is naturally found on valleys and slopes in the Aegean and Mediterranean Basins. It is a species that is used commercially a lot among the plants found here. It is a species that growers are quite interested in and its use in landscaping is more common than others.

As a result, growers, landscape architects, and landscapers should pay special attention to local species. In particular, growers should also pay attention to the production of other local species that are drought and drought tolerant.
