How is the Italian landscape and gardening industry doing?

Agricultural engineer Luigi Pagliani has been president of the National Association of Exporting Nurserymen (ANVE) in Italy since May 2022. He cultivates cypress, oak, and other Mediterranean trees on 42 hectares of land in Perugia. We compiled this news from his speech at the opening of Eroflora 2025.

According to data on the Italian garden and landscape sector, the focus appears to be on outdoor ornamental plants. However, particular attention is also paid to the production of fruit trees and citrus fruits. In Italy, 17,490 companies operate in the landscape and garden products sector. Of these, 54 are involved in gardening and landscaping. Furthermore, 26 companies specialize in plant propagation, and 20 specialize in forestry and the production of aromatic and pharmaceutical plants.

According to 2023 data, exports from the Italian landscape and garden products sector reached €1.2 billion, an increase of 5.4% compared to the previous year. Furthermore, while over 60% of sector companies in Italy prioritize sustainable agricultural practices, only 19% have access to public financing for green transformation. The Italian sector wants this to increase. Regarding innovation, 705% of Italian sector firms have invested in water and energy efficiency technologies. However, only 15% of these utilize advanced digital tools such as smart sensors, drones, or predictive models. The competitiveness of the Italian landscape and plant sector is being revitalized through proposals addressing operational issues such as access to credit, digitalization, training, and international promotion.
